How to install Handles and Knobs

Handles & Knobs Installation Guide

Before your begin

  • Read the installation instructions completely before starting.
  • Take care not to scratch your cabinets and benchtop while working with tools.

Recommended tools

Step 1. Location of Cabinet Handles & Knobs

  1. Decide where you would like to install your knobs and/or handles. (see the installation of placement position in the bottom of this page)
  2. For handles, measure between the holes on the back to determine the correct centre to centre hole spacing. 96mm are the most common spacing but there are numerous options to choose from. The trend in a contemporary kitchen is to use large and sleek rail or bar handles to create a sleek look.
  3. If you prefer horizontally mounted handles, make sure to choose handles that are not too long in proportion to the doors. When you open the doors, the handles might bump against other doors, drawer fronts or handles.

Step 2. Measuring

  1. To prevent damage while drilling it is always good idea to place masking tape in the approximate hole locations on the cabinet or drawer fronts prior to measuring.
  2. Carefully measure and mark each hole location using a ruler or tape measure and pencil.
  3. For drawers, it may be helpful to measure down the same distance on either side and lightly scribe a horizontal line with a pencil. Be sure to check for level.

Step 3. Drill the Holes

  1. arefully drill through the drawer and/or door fronts. Be sure to go slow and use minimal pressure to reduce splintering on the backside of the surface.

Step 4. Install the Knobs or Handles

  1. Insert the screws (provided for free) into the hole from the back of the door and place the handles or knobs in place on the front of the door. The screws are provided for a standard door. If your doors are very thick or very thin, you may want to get new screws so your handles fit properly.
  2. Screw from the back into the handle or knob until it is snug against the door and doesn’t rotate when you attempt to turn it. The screw head should be flush to the backside of the door. However, be careful not to over tighten the screws.

Handles & Knobs Placement Position

Where there are no hard, fast rules for placement of a knob or handle on a cabinet door, most cabinet makers will locate them approximately 5-7cm above the upper non-hinged corner on base cabinet or the lower non-hinged corner on wall cabinets. Knobs and/or handles installed on a kitchen drawer front are typically centered in the middle of the drawer, both top-down and side-to-side.
